The three main types of soil known to man include sand soil, loam soil and clay soil. These types of soil have different characteristics meaning they are used for varied reasons.

Soil is quite important as it helps in ensuring life can thrive on Earth. Plants get their nutrients from soil while human beings may use a given type of soil for different activities including construction or art. Below are the three main types of soil and their characteristics.

Loam soil – this type of soil normally has very fine particles making it one of the most reasonably aerated. It also contains humus which is ideal for supporting plant growth. Loam soil contains plant nutrients and allows animals like earthworm to thrive in it. This is the most commonly used soil for agriculture throughout the world.

Sand soil – this type of soil is known for its large particles and rough texture. It is most commonly found in coastal regions or lakes and oceans. Some deserts are also filled with sand soil. It is well aerated and allows water to pass through it quickly.

Clay soil – this type of soil has the finest particles of all soils. It easily retains water and is most commonly used for modelling or making domestic vessels.
